Mastering English can be both exciting and challenging, but don’t worry, because there are plenty of excellent free resources available to help you along the way. In this blog, I’ll introduce you to my top 6 favourite English learning resources that are not only free but also effective in improving your language skills. Each of these platforms offers a unique way to learn English, making it accessible and enjoyable for English learners like yourself. Let’s dive in and discover how these tools can help you achieve fluency in English!


No. 1 is Duolingo


This app has a free and paid version. It is perfect if you are a beginner or need high repetition.


No. 2 is British Council Teen and Adult websites


These websites have a lot of content for all levels ie A1 to C2. It includes a grammar section that can be helpful. They include regional accents in the audio recordings which helps you to improve your listening skills. The grading of content into levels helps, as you can start progressing and challenging yourself.


No. 3 is Ted Talk and Ted Ed


Ted Talk has hundreds of talks that you can listen to on almost any topic you can imagine. The talks are interesting and could challenge you to learn new vocabulary. Talks are usually 20-30 min long and perfect for listening while you commute or do mundane tasks.

If you have time constraints, Ted Ed is a fantastic resource of shorter educational videos, about 5 min. These are usually animated and with subtitles; they are accessible for beginners too. It includes discussion ideas to use as prompts to practice using your English.


No. 4 is English Exam Centres: Cambridge and Trinity College of London


Cambridge and Trinity College of London both offer English exams that are used for assessing learner’s speaking level. Their websites offer a lot of free resources to get exam ready. They also recommend and sell many great books. Even if you don’t intend doing an exam, you can use these resources to practice and improve.


No. 5 is BBC podcasts


BBC has a lot of different accents nowadays but in general, the presenters speak clearly and well. They have good use of English and will help you to learn how to speak about current issues and topics. The advantage is learning English while learning about current affairs.


No. 6 is Linguapress


This website Linguapress.com is has written articles for intermediate and advanced English. Some of the articles have audios – just try to avoid using the Ai generated audios to avoid learning robot English :-). You can hear BBC / Standard English spoken clearly. The advantage is to listen, pause and repeat. Even if you do this for 5 min a day, you will improve your pronunciation and intonation.
