Lights dim, the stage awaits, and anticipation fills the air. Whether you’re stepping onto a stage, presenting in a boardroom, or gearing up for a crucial meeting, the importance of a solid performance warm-up routine cannot be overstated. In this blog post, we’ll explore the transformative effects of a pre-performance ritual, shedding light on how it can shift your energy, calm nerves, and prepare your voice and breath for the spotlight. Get ready to discover the magic that happens before the show begins!
Shifting Energy:
Picture this: You’re about to deliver a presentation to a room full of eager listeners. Your heart is racing, and nervous energy threatens to overpower your focus. This is where a performance warm-up routine works its magic. By engaging in activities that shift your energy, you create a mental and emotional space for optimal performance.
One notable example comes from the world of motivational speaking. Tony Robbins, the iconic life coach and speaker, is known for his high-energy performances that captivate audiences worldwide. Before stepping onto the stage, Robbins engages in a dynamic warm-up routine that includes physical exercises, icy dips in water, jumping on a trampoline, vocal warm-ups, and positive affirmations! This not only helps him channel his energy effectively but also sets the tone for an impactful presentation.
Calm Nerves:
Even the most seasoned performers experience pre-show jitters. The key is not to eliminate nervousness entirely but to transform it into a positive force. A performance warm-up routine serves as a valuable tool to calm nerves and channel that nervous energy into a focused and confident presence.
Take the example of Jen Gottlieb, mentioned in my previous post. She calms her performance nerves with a routine that starts with how she dresses and applies her make up. She keeps a “Badass” list in her wallet that lists all the amazing things she has done with her life. This helps her to remember that she is able to overcome her fear and perform.
My secret to calming my nerves is through the use of deep breaths. Together with a “super-hero” pose, I can get control of my nerves. Through repetition and practice, you can use a simple breathing technique to connect yourself with the present moment, calm down and transform into a positive energetic state.
Preparing Voice and Breath:
For those whose performances rely on their voice – singers, public speakers, actors – a proper warm-up routine for the vocal cords is crucial. This involves exercises to stretch, strengthen, and relax the muscles involved in producing sound. We would never imagine engaging in physical activity without a warm up. Our voice needs the same treatment!
I suggest a warm up that includes the following: stretches, rolling your neck, testing for stress in the throat area. Deep breaths. Shake your arms around to loosen up. Use your favourite tongue twisters to make sure your mouth is ready to perform too. All the time, checking for a positive mindset. Remember, the feeling of fear and excitement is actually quite similar, so it’s possible to shift into excitement.
In conclusion, whether you’re an aspiring artist, a business professional, or someone preparing for a crucial moment in the spotlight, incorporating a performance warm-up routine into your pre-show rituals can be a game-changer. It’s not just about physical warm-ups; it’s about shifting your energy, calming nerves, and preparing your voice and breath for the performance of a lifetime.
So, the next time you find yourself on the brink of a significant moment, take a cue from the Tony Robbins and other great performers of the world – invest in a performance warm-up routine! The magic begins before the show, and with the right preparation, you’ll be ready to shine brightly in the spotlight!
