Rome wasn't built in a day, and becoming confident and fluent in English won't happen overnight either. Instead, focus on daily actions that keep you motivated and energized, without leaving you feeling overwhelmed or discouraged.
Here are my top suggestions to help you get going, take action and improve your English speaking:
1. Define Specific Goals
- Identify the most common situations where you need English (e.g., meetings, presentations, small talk, emails).
- Set clear, measurable objectives, such as "Speak confidently during weekly team meetings" or "Deliver a 5-minute presentation fluently."
- Spend a little time thinking about your problems and practical solutions.
- Give yourself actions to do that will help you overcome the problems.
- For example, a work related vocabulary list, practice formal English phrases.
2. Practice Speaking Regularly
- Daily Practice: Dedicate 10–15 minutes daily to speaking aloud. Practice phrases or vocabulary you use at work.
- If you don't have English speakers/learners to speak with, then read aloud. This will improve the connection between the words in your mind and the production of the words with your mouth.
- Role-play Scenarios: Rehearse conversations, meetings, or presentations you encounter at work.
3. Build Workplace-Specific Vocabulary
- Learn and practice industry-specific terms and phrases. Create a glossary of common words or phrases relevant to your role.
- Use tools like Google Translate or Grammarly to ensure accuracy.
4. Focus on Pronunciation and Clarity
- Use resources like YouTube or pronunciation apps (e.g., Elsa Speak, Speechling) to refine your accent.
- Practice with tongue twisters or phonics drills to improve articulation.

6. Use Positive Affirmations
- Replace self-doubt with confidence-building phrases, e.g., "I am improving my English every day," or "I communicate effectively in English."
7. Shadow Native Speakers
- Listen to workplace-related podcasts, TED Talks, or colleagues. Mimic their pronunciation, tone, and vocabulary.
- Watch professional videos or shows with subtitles for immersion.
8. Seek Feedback
- Ask trusted colleagues or friends to provide feedback on your speaking.
- Record yourself speaking and evaluate areas for improvement.
- Learn how to become your own kind, empowering critic who wants to be successful and confident.
9. Work with a Coach, Teacher or Mentor
- A coach can guide you with tailored feedback, confidence-building techniques, and practical exercises specific to your role.

10. Be Patient and Celebrate Progress
- Acknowledge small wins. Confidence grows with consistent practice and positive reinforcement.
- Sometimes we focus too much on our faults or lack of perfection. Remember, we don't have to be perfect to be heard. We don't need to speak with Queen's English to be respected. Speak up and celebrate your own unique voice, accent and ideas!
