Never underestimate the power of stories! Facts are important, but there’s scientific evidence that stories ignite your audience’s brain. They take the journey with you, feeling, responding, exploring—and remembering.
Here’s a short story from me… (it really happended 👀)
This week, as usual, I was driving to my first job early in the morning, leaving home before sunrise. In the distance, I could see the silhouette of “La Motte”—an old Moorish castle—outlined against a dark blue dawn. I love this time of day when my daughter and I can chat in the car before the day truly begins.
Then suddenly, something large and black burst out from the side of the road. I screamed, bracing for the impact of something hitting the car.
“What the heck, Mom?” my daughter exclaimed. “You made me jump out of my skin!”
“Something hit the car,” I replied, feeling confused and uncertain, even though it was clear nothing had happened.
Silence fell between us. My heart was still pounding, and I could feel the adrenaline rush in my body.
Finally, my daughter broke the silence: “It’s obviously some sort of energetic force, like a skinwalker. But don’t worry, Mom—it can’t harm you.”
We kept driving. I don’t even believe in this stuff, but I said, “Ok, that’s good to know.”
When you hear a story, all the parts of our brain light up. Here is a link to a Ted Talk by Karen Eber explaining this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJfGby1C3C4
This week one of my clients said that telling a story "made her sweat". It was that hard for her. I hope you can see how your brain lights up with a story and realise too; that we need to practice storytelling.
